BMW R1300GS Review: 7 months later
Firstly, apologies at the length of this video, I went out with all intentions of being concise, succinct and to the point and I realised that it's harder than I thought to ride a bike, follow the rules of the road AND try to narrate along at the same time but I will try harder next time. I was also trying to record helmet audio for the first ever so I spent too much time messing around and should really have recorded in smaller blocks to edit a shorter video.

For context my bike is a 2022 (new in Feb 2023) R1250GS Adventure with 9000miles on. The dealer has told me this is normal for all 1250's and to "prime" the engine by pressing the starter button briefly to release the decompression valve, then to start it normally. My 2019 1250 didn't do this, so, whats your thoughts?

    I rode the 1300GS twice and found the seat and Rider Triangle to make for a very, very uncomfortable ride and the power not that much more than my 1250GS. I'm keeping my 1250GS!

    The price is pretty absurd in Australia - I'll be waiting until BMW fixes their vario cases before I decide which way I'm going to go, but I don't think I can justify LR's prices.

    Love your vids, thanks! I’m just coming up on my first service for the same bike you have. When I got it, I thought the seat was a little firm. As the miles came on it definitely softened and I’m very happy with it. By the way, computers do the buffering, windshields do the buffeting.

    Great video - appreciate the insight, as I'll be getting my GS in a few months (week 34 build). I think I saw the same review video, of the Gilles shift lever. If I hadn't purchased the 719 Option version, I'm pretty sure I'd be buying the Gilles - it looks like a nice bit of kit. Apparently, the shift lever on the 719 actually is made by Gilles.

    And yet now there is another recall coming. This was what I was told yesterday at my main dealer. Apparently they are going swap the solid state relay for an electromechanical one. One chap had delivered his bike for a service and they were not allowed to give it back to him. I was told they would swap mine during a service I have booked in September. Thanks mate! Having not tested any of the Chigee units it’s hard to say, I’d love to get my hands on the Play version specifically for BMW. I suspect the Chigee is probably more robust in terms of getting updates as the Carpuride I have to update it they have to send you a link to a file and it’s a bit of a faff so I think in that regard the Chigee would be more of a long term solution. If I can afford it at some point I’m tempted to buy one!

    Is there not a Dynamic Pro riding mode on this bike? Dynamic but with the softer Road mode dialled in.

    • @TheStammeringBiker
      @TheStammeringBiker 9 дней назад

      Yeah I have Dynamic Pro enabled on it, I should have mentioned that in the video. I have it set so that in Dynamic mode it sets the suspension to Road with -2 on the damping which makes it a little softer but still not as "plush" as the 1250 was. Don't get me wrong it's not awful and I love riding it in Dynamic Pro mode but if the roads aren't perfectly smooth I find Dynamic for the suspension to be a little too "crashy" most of the time. Didn't experience this as much on either of the 1250's. If you meant how eager it is to lift the front I haven't altered the setting for throttle response in the settings as I tend to just either have it in Road or Dynamic Pro depending on the riding, it'll lift the front in 3rd even in Road mode at times.

    I have a Triple Black exactly the same spec as yours except mine has cast wheels. I have also done over 6000 miles. I agree with most of your comments although I have not owned a BMW before and so have no comparison to make with a 1250. I came from a Multistrada V4S and don’t regret the change. Your tyres mystify me though. My bike came with the Anakee’s which I hated because of road noise so I swapped them for the Metzeler Tourance Next 2’s which have now done 5000 miles. The rear only has 2.5 mm left and is squared off terribly. Perhaps the OEM version is harder than the aftermarket? I find the quickshift gear changing to be as good as the Multistrada going up and better going down. Enjoy the Picos, Li went there in April and the roads and scenery are fantastic

    • @TheStammeringBiker
      @TheStammeringBiker 10 дней назад

      Thanks Scratcher! Yeah the tyres are a mystery to me too, there’s at least 5mm on the rear left and 3mm on the front. I did Brindisi in Italy to Manchester all motorway at 70ish MPH speeds and I expected them to be totally square and to my surprise they weren’t! I’ve always thought OEM tyres are harder than the off the shelf variants, I can’t prove it but I’m fairly sure. I don’t think I’ve ever had a rear tyre last beyond about 4000miles in my 20 years of riding 😳

    I have the Lone Rider panniers and like them. I also have the bottle holders and feel like they could’ve been better designed. They aren’t large enough for some bottles I’d like to carry. However, I’ve never lost a bottle out of them. I only have the latch fitment issue on the right side of the bike. On the BMW GSA, there’s a weld point that can be filed down to improve that. I’d hope LR wouldn’t send out pannier racks with that issue. The latching is a bit fiddly but that seems to get better over time…maybe.

      Reading messages via vocal transcripts is an Apple CarPlay thing not specific to this unit, the built in Apple CarPlay on my car does the same. I own a 2019 R1250 GS Adventure which I bought new and I live in Victoria, Australia. I will keep this as short as possible and try and avoid going into any details that readers and fellow owners already know. I have experienced all the starting problems that have been documented by riders around the world for four years. The sudden and unexplained no-start events, the myriad of TFT screen fault messages etc. I do not know if this problem applies to every MY but it certainly applies to MY19, MY20 and MY21 as I have read user complaints online. I have used a total of four AGM batteries in four years, Exide (which caused problems in the first 3 weeks of bike delivery), Deka, Yuasa and SSB, all have been either 200 CCA or 240 CCA batteries. Batteries have always been fully charged and able to pass a load test when the bike failed to start and have been connected to an appropriate charger when the bike has not been in use. So battery problems are not confined to a specific batch of Exide batteries that were factory fitted by BMW when the bike was new. My son has an R1200 GS Adventure, he has used the same AGM batteries, and he has had zero starting problems over the four years that I have owned my bike. Regardless of the healthy status of all four AGM batteries the starting problems have always suggested that a battery power problem existed. Any mature vehicle system does not require changes to valve clearances, or require pushing whilst in gear, or any other unusual or creative change to get the vehicle to start. Does anyone have to do that with their car? Standard comments from BMW dealers have included ‘cannot replicate the fault’ and ‘they all do that’ along with others. Is BMW Motorrad really happy with that state of affairs? It has appeared so. I purchased a GOOLOO GP2000 lithium jump starter, it is small, light, and quick and easy to use. I carry it in my top box and it started the bike every time I needed it to. The bike started instantly and essentially proves that the complete starting circuit is serviceable provided that sufficient cranking power is available. BMW obviously made significant changes (mechanical & electrical) from the R1200 GS Adventure to the R1250 GS Adventure. When making those configuration changes did they carry out a detailed Power Management study under all user operating conditions, in all environments that users operate these bikes in, and over a reasonable period of time to ensure that the starting circuit for instance, from the battery right through to the starter motor and everything in-between, were compatible and actually worked? Only BMW know the answer to that question. I used the GOOLOO GP2000 for many months on many occasions to prove to myself that the starting circuit is serviceable enough to be operated as designed, and as delivered on the bike when it was new. Once I was convinced that the problem was the power source then I researched a safe and more capable alternative. You can research the various chemistries of Lithium batteries yourselves if you wish, I selected Lithium (Li) Iron (Fe) Phosphate (PO4) which is LiFePO4, it’s the safest battery chemistry and fit for purpose. I purchased a SSB Powersport Lithium Ultralite, LiFePO4, LFP14H-BS, 150mm X 87mm x 93mm. The battery came complete with screw on plastic spacers to raise the battery height to suit the motorcycle battery compartment. The bike now enthusiastically starts first time every time, under all conditions and as it should have done when I purchased it in the first place. I finally have the bike that I thought I purchased four years ago. Ignition has improved and all lights and displays have improved. If this problem went away at some production point then what was changed during production and why don’t all users know about it? Prior to starting the bike the ‘My Vehicle’ screen on the TFT display always shows a battery voltage approaching, or at, 13 volts. I have an Ozcharge OC-PRO80L 12 volt 480ma LiFePO4 battery charger which I have not used again since I charged the battery when it was new straight out of the box. As soon as the charger tells you that the battery is fully charged then disconnect the charger. I have a charging pigtail lead fitted to the bike and I check the battery voltage with a meter via this lead before using the bike. The battery voltage is now always between 13.27 volts and 13.30 volts. The most the voltage ever drops in a week or more is 0.01 volts (1/100th of a volt) which is probably due to the bike internal clock and maybe a standby function of the keyless start module. The bike charging system is capable of keeping the battery charged and I will only use the battery charger/maintainer if the battery voltage ever drops below 13 volts which it hasn’t done and so far doesn’t look like it will. You do NOT, and SHOULD NOT, keep the appropriate battery charger/maintainer connected to your bike when the bike is not in use. Do I leave the GOOLOO GP2000 at home? No I don’t as I may meet a fellow R1250 GSA rider one day who is stuck at the side of the road/trail or next to a fuel pump in a service station because his bike will not start.

      If this works out for me. I shall forever be grateful to you. Now the challenge will be to find/source this particular battery here in India. Thank you ☺️

    Many thanks, I have the W502 version, which had old firmware, so I emailed Carpuride they emailed back the the updated firmware, this must be dowbloaded on a SD card no bigger that 32gb, I tired orgianally with a 64GB, but it could'nt read it, works fine with 32GB. Now has option to use audio output ... works perfectly with Iphone & Packtalk bold.Just ordered spare power cable and BMW cable mount, so I can swop it between 2 bikes.

    edit: Wish I had purchased the W502B but the W702B works well with the available BMW mount. However, your mount looks more substantial When using a Cardo Freecomn 4X, connect to the phone only to retain all of the Cardo voice and headset controls. You may need to toggle the phone button to activate the interaction with the CarPlay unit.

    I've had these 4 years now, lots of use and even a low speed spill. Absolutely tough as old boots, not even a mark after the spill and they protected the bike to boot. The only failure I've had is the elastic bands that tidy the loose strap ends have perished. The bottle holders are brilliant and will happily take a wine bottle or a Yeti drinks bottle.
